| dc.description.abstractOther | This research aims to analyze the process of constructing authority and gender performativity of Queen Joanna I of Naples (1326-1382) before the Roman Church, reflecting on how marriage, motherhood, and piety functioned as discursive spaces of power and negotiation of royal governance based on papal correspondence. Throughout thirty-eight years, Joanna remained on the throne as reigning queen, assuming the political, gender, and contractual responsibilities that her position and the Church conferred upon her – given her subjection to the political-religious institution as a vassal and Christian. Although she possessed the dynastic right to governance, the sovereign's power and political confidence proved unstable throughout her reign, requiring her to undergo a continuous process of legitimation before Christian society and the papacy. Thus, using a counter-reading methodology of papal letters and employing the concepts of queenship and performativity, we demonstrate that Joanna’s authority and performativity are constructed in connection with her relationships of sociability and vassalage with the Apostolic See, as well as guided by social expectations and power struggles that permeate marriage, motherhood, and piety, visible through her epistolary communication. In this sense, when articulated together, these three paths, analyzed in each of the three chapters, reveal Joanna’s strategies, highlighting tensions, negotiations with the Roman papacy, and possibilities for female royal agency in the 14th century | en |
