Pigmentary superficial keratitis (PSK) is a chronic corneal disorder, with different causes, which may include immune-mediated diseases and reaction to ultraviolet rays. It is one of the most common and important clinical manifestations in the group of brachycephalic races of dogs, currently popularized in our country and frequently attended by specialists in animal ophthalmology. This study aimed to evaluate the use of automated central lamellar superficial keratectomy in the treatment of chronic pigmentary superficial keratitis in dogs. Twenty-four animals that presented chronic pigmentary superficial keratitis with visual loss even after clinical treatment were included. However, they maintained the preserved post-corneal transparent media, and therefore, with potential for visual function recovery after surgical treatment. To perform the surgical procedure, the animals were placed in the prone position. The eyes were kept open with the aid of a blepharostat and centered by the action of the peribulbar block. The microkeratome was positioned on the surface of the eyeball, and after the end of its translation, the central corneal lamellae were obtained. The removed material was placed in individual glass vials containing 10% buffered formalin and sent for histopathological evaluation using specific stains. With the adopted technique, 21 animals (87.5%) recovered visual function. In 3 animals (12.5%) there was formation of cicatricial granuloma and subsequent formation of central leukoma in the cornea, compromising the transparency of the visual axis. The present study concludes that automated central lamellar superficial keratectomy - CSLCA - is a viable surgical alternative for the restoration of visual function in dogs suffering from severe CSPC with visual loss, thus improving the quality of life of these animals. For being performed in a short time, the technique reduces anesthetic costs and riskseng
