Twenty adult chickens were obtained at District of Seropédica, Municipality of Itaguaí in the State of Rio de Janeiro. This District is localized within the lowlands of the Metropolitan region of the City of Rio de Janeiro with some rural characteristics. The chickens were raised in contact with soil in backyards. Specimens of brain, heart, lung, liver, spleen, kidney, ovary-oviduct and pectoral striated muscle were inoculated, subcutaneously, into mice. Toxoplasma gondii was isolated in 30% of hearts, 20% of brains, 5% of spleens and 5% of ovary-oviducts of examinated chickens. The majority of mice, in which the isolation was successful, had symptomatology, and died between postinoculation day (PID) 12 and 21. At necropsy, lung was the most affected organ. Cysts were found in their brains after PID 13. Tachyzoites were found in the lungs of mice that died naturally, after PID 12; and were also found at PID xxi . 30. Difuse interstitial pneumonia was a constant lesion and usually it was associated with the presence of the parasite. The isolation of T. gondii in 30% of examinated chickens suggest, indirectly, an important contamination of the environment with oocysts eliminated in feces of naturally infected cats.eng
