Seed dispersers’ animals are important as they move seeds to different places within their natural habitat, representing numerous possibilities for the establishment of new individuals. The fruits of most tree species in tropical forests are dispersed by zoochory. However, in many parts of these forests hunting and habitat fragmentation have caused the extinction of several animals, with the loss of ecological interactions that are important to the maintenance of diversity in these environments, such as seed dispersal. This study was carried out in Tijuca National Park (PNT, 3958 ha, 22 º 55 '- 23 ° 00' S and 43 º 11 '- 43 º 19' W), an Atlantic forest fragment converted to agriculture in the past, which leads to population reductions or disappearance of some species of fauna and flora. The agouti Dasyprocta leporina was one of the species affected by this process. In an attempt to mitigate the effects caused by human disturbance in the PNT, a project of reintroduction of this species was started in 2009. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate if the reintroduction of an important seed disperser restores interactions lost in the Atlantic forest, using the palm Astrocaryum aculeatissimum as a study model. This dissertation has been structured in two chapters. In the first was assessed the population structure and spatial pattern of this palm in the absence of these animals. In the second, was evaluated the influence of the agouti reintroduction in seed dispersal and seedling recruitment of A. aculeatissimum. The analysis of the population structure and the spatial patterns was carried out in a 120 x 130 m plot, where all palm individuals were counted, mapped and classified in ontogenetic stages. The spatial distribution and the spatial relation among different stages were analyzed using the Ripley’s K function. Removal experiments were carried out to compare seed fate between areas without agoutis and areas where these animals were reintroduced. From the 376 sampled individuals, most were juveniles (60%), and few seedlings (7%) were found. The spatial pattern of the population was aggregated and there were no spatial dependence among individuals in the early stages and adults. Buried seeds were found only in areas where agoutis were reintroduced. The low number of seedlings indicates limitations in recruitment of the species. However, the burial of seeds by agoutis may favor the establishment of new individuals of this palm. The results show that some interactions between the palm and its main seed disperser were restored after reintroduction of these animals.eng
