Abstract: The Last Glacial Maximum represents the end of the last glaciation and is marked by a reduction in average temperature across the globe compared to current averages. During this period, climate fluctuations caused changes in vegetation, which resulted in the biological diversification of biomes. However, there are diverging hypotheses for the diversification of biomes in the Neotropics. The refugia hypothesis states that the Amazon forest was fragmented during glacial periods. However, several studies refute this hypothesis, stating that the Amazon forest has remained intact. But these studies generally focus on climatic factors, ignoring possible interactions between climatic factors and factors such as atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and fire. Thus, the actual influence of the reduction in the level of atmospheric CO2 and the occurrence of forest fires on vegetation change still remains scarce. In view of this, the present study aims to analyze the changes in vegetation in Brazil during the last glacial maximum. For this purpose, we used as methodology the simulation of vegetation cover reconstructions for the Last Glacial Maximum (UMG) period in comparison to the control scenario of the Preindustrial period (~1850-1943). The simulations of vegetation change were performed with the MIROC3.2 model. Four vegetation reconstruction scenarios of the Brazilian biomes were evaluated for the pre-industrial period and the UMG, with a change in the variation of atmospheric CO2 concentration and the existence of forest fires for tropical and temperate rainforest. The results showed vegetation change, especially for the reduction of tropical forests with large trees, which were replaced by less dense forests with open canopy or regions with low vegetation or even desert. The change in CO2 concentration and the occurrence of forest fires can accelerate the process of degradation of vegetation in Brazilian biomes.
