The objective of this study was to compare two different forest formations, one in Brazil and one in Canada. The first study area is located in a private forest called Haliburton Forest Wildlife Reserve Ltd., in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada, with an area of 13.53 hectars. The second one in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brasil, with a total area of 327.52 hectares and a sampled area of 1.9 hectars. The North-American forest was classified as Decidual Temperate Forest while the Brazillian one is part of the Atlantic Rainforest and was identified as Semidicual Stational Forest. The collected data for this study was species identification, diameter at breast height and geographic coordinates. Statistical analyses were applied, including floristic composition, horizontal structure, GDq method and Morisita Index. As expexted, the results showed the distinction between the two forests with no species overlap between them. In the Decidual Temperate Forest the floristic diversity results were 0.00136 for Jentsch Mixture Ratio, 2.17492 for Shannon’s Diversity Index and 0.70362 for Pielou’s Equability Index. In the Stational Semidecidual Forest the results were, in order: 0.11758; 4.60376 and 0.83873. The species with a higher importance value index were, Acer saccharum (28.55), Tsuga canadensis(23.74) e Abies balsamea (19.97), for the Decidual Temperate Forest, and Myrcia splandens (8.125) e Ocotea diospyrifolia (7.255), in the Semideciual Stational Forest. The Decidual Temperate Forest presented 100% of the species with a regular distribution while the Semidecidual Stational Forest showed 90% of the species with an aggregated pattern of distribution. Both forests exhibit a tendency for a negative exponential curve for the diametric distribution and demonstrated good adequancy to the GDq method.pt_BR
